G8 Luck / The Coin Has No Memory

The Correction That Never Arrives

A run of bad mornings does not build up credit towards a good one.

There is a feeling almost everyone has had. Something has gone against you repeatedly, and you begin to sense that the balance must be about to tip, that you are owed. The bus has been late all week, so surely today. The weather has been foul for the whole visit, so surely tomorrow. The feeling is powerful and it is entirely mistaken whenever the events are independent. A coin that has come up heads many times in a row is not carrying a debt. It has no record of what it did, no mechanism for remembering, and no interest in restoring balance. The next flip begins from nothing.

The confusion comes from a real fact that has been misapplied. Over a very long run, the proportions of a fair process do settle down. That is true. But they settle by dilution, not by compensation. The early lopsided stretch is not cancelled out by an opposite stretch sent to correct it. It is simply swamped by the volume of ordinary results that follow. Nothing goes back and fixes the imbalance. It just stops mattering, in the way a loud noise stops mattering once you have walked far enough away from it.

So the honest position on a bad run is uncomfortable but freeing. It is not building towards anything. You are not accumulating anything. The next independent event is exactly as it always was, and the only sensible question is what you can influence rather than what you are due. Where events are genuinely linked, and many are, that is a different matter, and worth separating carefully from this one.
